The purpose for the course is for the Therapeutic Specialist to be equipped with the necessary knowledge, skills and attitude to perform job specific tasks related to HPC-A in the field of blood transfusion.

This course will enable the nurse to function as a clinically focused, service orientated, independent registered professional nurse, who is able to render comprehensive care with stable and uncomplicated general health problems, as determined by the appropriate legislative framework. The qualifying learner will apply evidence-based research to enhance nursing practice.

This course will recognize the essential knowledge and skills required to monitor physiological factors and maintain homeostasis in the patient/donor.


At the end of the course the learner will be able to:

  • Evaluate/Monitor the donor/patient for the development of potential complications during a HPC-A.
  • Develop a nursing care plan and provide evidence-based nursing interventions for disturbances in physiological homeostasis.
  • Describe and discuss the basic pathophysiology of disease treated by HPC-A
  • Analyse the principles of basic haematology and of the ABO/Rh system
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the appropriate use of cell separation technologies.
  • Exhibit an understanding and respond effectively to emergencies.
  • Model a commitment to continuous professional development and the capacity to maintain intellectual curiosity throughout life.
